After IBM's Deep Blue beat Gary Kasparov in 1997, humans did not stop playing chess all together. Rather, human players were able to improve their game thanks to the help of AI trainers, and for a while thereafter human-AI teams known as 'centaurs' dominated both individual human and computer players. It's possible that advancements in AI will give rise to similar cooperative advancements in different fields.
